I think this tends to be an unpopular thought in the anglosphere Pokémon fandom but I am glad they bother having actual plots in the mainline games. Because otherwise you are playing a slate so blank they may as well be transparent. The player characters genuinely have no identity beyond their designs. As someone who does not self insert into stories the way others do, I need the person I am controlling to have SOMETHING. I do not feel the need to make my own story in a mainline Pokémon game because the protagonist barely exists beyond eye candy. Also, some of the regions are just uninteresting, but that's a different tangent.

I mean, Pokémon Masters EX basically has to make up characters for the protagonists. And like Red only started being an icon or something after being in GSC where we could, I guess, get some hints of him being reclusive? overly dedicated? Whatever makes one climb the top of a mountain and not contact your Mom. It's a fucking joke how the Sun Moon protagonists have a blank smile throughout the entire game. The fact your character emotes in Legends Arceus is revolutionary.

TBH a lot of monster tamers have this issue. You play as Nothing that you're supposed to put yourself into. I feel a disconnect about it, from these games and their fanbases. Uhm... I still like some of them for having interesting bits of worldbuilding, at least. Like Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Alola, they have fun worlds to me. I like what Palworld says about its monsters, and the kind of culture that's formed on the Palpagos Isles. Coromon's plot is, interesting, at least before this rewrite the devs didn't elaborate on. Or there are games that are just fun enough that I can bypass this issue, like Moonstone Island, Monster Rancher 1&2, or maybe Abomination (although this is a bit different as you don't play as one character but rather a rotating group that shifts based on your playthrough and who survives). Telefang 1 is a mix of both of these; having a silly/engaging enough plot/characters/world and game mechanics that make it stand out a little more.

But also some games actually give the character you're playing as, conviction, a "purpose" so to speak. The Dragon Quest Monsters games come to mind. Particularly the last one where you play as the final boss of DQ4, Psaro, and see him grow in power and prestige in the monster world, and I think even change the timeline eventually. Uh, I lost all my progress on that game before I finished it unfortunately. Or there is also Nexomon Extinction which also gives your character a certain backstory that builds on the world and relationships established in the last game. It also characterizes the MC as a weirdo, because the writer is silly.

I can imagine that everything I'm saying is probably alien to other people and, I am not purposefully trying to be contrarian, these are my feelings from my heart put into words to the best of my ability. Please tell me your thoughts too on the way protagonists are utilized in monster tamers, I want to understand you too.

Ok, let me elaborate on my opinion. I think Pichu is a really good chibi. Just perfectly sized head, body, limbs. It's all proportionally perfect. And the pink cheeks accent its yellow fur better than red, to me.

Raichu has kind of an oval shape that has been a little smooshed like clay? It's very blobby. And I think that's a nice look for a rodent. And I prefer the orange color and countershade belly. Somehow speaks more "electric" than yellow does to me. Alolan Raichu also feels very huggable. It has really good paws I feel. And the tail surfing thing is neat, but I think it would also be cool to see it floating, mid air like Mew does. Overall it manages to feel lighter and softer than Kantonian Raichu, it's a nice contrast.

And the Mega forms of Raichu, they are kind of funny, goofy in how they need to be X and Y shaped... But it's good that they emphasized Raichu's tail and ears. In such a way that it's like. ZAP! POW!! SHOCKED!!! They feel rougher than base Raichu. I would probably add claws to them if I draw them, to give a more feral feeling.

So then, uh. Pikachu. I do like the "original fat design" most. Particularly how it's drawn in Pokémon Special, where it feels like a Ball of Rodent. But there are little things that don't grab me. It's kind of flat colorwise. And I dunno, it doesn't look as nice as, like, Jigglypuff's flat pink. Yellow is kind of hard to do without more accents. Also, despite it being round in the early days, it also had too much of a cube form to it? Which doesn't feel so nice for organic mammals, I guess. Sorry, I feel like I'm nitpicking a bit...

Well, I can't say hype backlash isn't a large part of my disdain for Pikachu. I'm just tired of seeing it everywhere. Gen 1 has cooler and cuter Pokémon to me. And even some of the Pikaclones build on the electric rodent concept in more fun ways that make them stand out more in design and in battle.

I was never interested in Palworld
because the designs vaguely resemble Pokémon. Yeah it's "obvious" that's where the visual ques come from, but besides that they are not that similar. The entire vibe of the universe is different, the gameplay is not that much of a turn based RPG, the way the monsters are talked about also has a different feel, as do their relationships to each other. I wish the set design was more stylized, but this is an issue in nearly every non-platformer 3D game in the modern day. But my point is I don't like Palworld "despite" or "beyond" the Pokémon influence. That was never a factor in my enjoyment.

Nobody else can move past that aspect though and it's so annoying. Not like it's the first game with a monster bestiary to be compared to Pokémon. In fact, the collective video game fandom LOVES comparing everything to everything else. It's everywhere, not much to be done I guess, but it makes it hard to enjoy stuff within a community, if that makes sense. Some things I just have to enjoy in an isolated way.

I got sleep. So anyway. I still like Pokémon and want to follow it. But I also resent the massive success. I don't think this is a series that should have the mainline go on for 30 years. At some point you just exhaust the amount of completely separate island "regions" you can have. Not to mention ideas for mythology and lore. I don't feel like the dev team behind mainline are that passionate about it anymore and it shows in the detail, the lack thereof, the lack of optimization, etc. I can't blame them I guess. When you have to release like 1 game every 1-2 years you don't have time to sit down and really plan and make something special. They are not afforded the same privilege as the devs of Super Mario Wonder.

Even if they did, what else is there left to do? This formula is not very malleable imo. Only so much you could do before it's the same thing over and over. You know, people wish Star Fox and F-Zero would come back, but I am glad they "stopped" eventually. I wouldn't want it to force itself to continue into repetition.

And I have noticed and missed the lack of spinoffs. I was basically begging for something like Pokopia. Different takes on the world and mechanics. This kind of thing just died after Gen 7, and it's put a damper on my excitement for the franchise. I don't know about anyone else but I think that was what kept me coming back. I think PMD is fun and the stories are memorable enough. I didn't like playing Pokémon Ranger but it's still unique. Pokémon Snap is an adorable concept that more games should try.

There was this encyclopedia book that came out right after the inital release of Red and Green. There was extra bits of lore, species building, world building stuff. I doubt it's even canon anymore, and something like it probably wouldn't happen these days. It's not well documented in English, and it goes for at least $170 on ebay, but it's scanned on archive. https://archive.org/details/pokemon-illustrated-book-of-pocket-monsters-character-art-book-encyclopedia-poke/page/n8/mode/1up I think it's sad we'll never get something like this again.

I don't know what else to say at this point. It's not like the older stuff has disappeared completely so I can still go back to it whenever. And I guess I can make up stories with my friends. But I am just not that inspired by Pokémon like I was when I was younger.

I like monster games but admittedly the actual, creature design doesn't tend to stand out or deviate that much from the kind of "standard" Pokémon set. I couldn't even really describe what the design philosophy of Pokémon is because it changes every generation but you can also tell when it's being riffed on. Because it's so ubiquitous, I guess.

Personally I think Palworld leans so heavily into the riffing that it wraps back around to being unique, but I have also played it enough that the designs are cozy to me. (Sidenote: There are like 4 separate wikis for Palworld :V) Besides that I don't think most artists know how to take on this Pokémon design without it being too comparable. And personally (again) I think more artists should look at the designs of Pokémon's contemporaries instead.

Like, the bizarreness of Monster Rancher. That kind of style has untapped potential. There are also games like Monster Crown that have choices that harken back to the general time period instead of just Pokémon, and also put a spin on it, like MC having a mix of mythical and scientific elements. Abomi Nation feels like arts and crafts coming to life. Uhm... There was something else, can't remember my Steam library right now.

Coming up with "original" ideas is hard anyway. Especially when you are making 100+ monsters and trying to fit them all in a world. I think having a unifying theme can help. Uh. 🚆 of 💭 lost now goodnight

I'm kind of sick of Deltarune now.
And no I haven't played it I am just tired of seeing theories and memes about it...

I think everyone is, wrong about it, but I don't have any like ideas or theories myself, I think things will be left unexplained as they were in Undertale. And leave too much vague. I feel like there is just too much stuff we not only don't know but can't know because there are not enough details and Toby doesn't do AMAs or Word of God author notes, really.

Also the release schedule is really frustrating. Why's everything gotta be in Early Access or released in parts... I would rather wait for a full game.  #gamersteak

I know the Weird Route in Deltarune is supposed to emphasize how bad "you" are for doing these things, but I don't think enough people are asking why this game, or "program" as it were, even allows such a thing to happen. I think there is a bigger force at play and it's very vague and mysterious.
