I normally only read digitally, but I picked up some comics for Free Comic Book Day earlier this year. Today I had the time to read through one of the issues.

This one, published by Kodansha, included short excerpts from Initial D and Kaina of the Great Snow Sea.

I was open to being won over by characters or another hook by Initial D, but my antipathy for cars made this comic fall very flat for me.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea, however, was engaging from the start. Some compelling world building and mystery had me hooked for this short section of the first volume and I’d be open to reading the full thing.

Stack Clean: Redline #3

I'm finally at the bottom of the stack of physical comic issues I had build up, and I have to say it's a relief. I'll be happy to go back to reading digital issues that I actually expect to enjoy.

Stack Clean: Savage Things #7

I wasn't sure what to expect from Savage Things, and was left cold by it. This issue, at least, is a fairly boring take on assassins trained from childhood to kill with plenty of tired tropes.

Stack Clean: Wytches #3

After suffering through some rough issues as I clean up my stack of comics, it was great to read a comic I could actually enjoy. This comic feels like a horror movie, with tension, surprises and art that builds a feeling of dread. It's not a series I was interested in before, but reading an issue with the story mid-stream has me curious.

Stack Clean: Eugenic #1

Eugenic #1, unlike the past few issues I've cleared from my stack, was engaging. The central science fiction premise is interesting, and the delivery makes the horror of eugenics more approachable.

Stack Clean: The Eltingville Club #1

The Eltingville Club #1 is another of those comics I'm just not set up to enjoy. It was a slog through the recounting of the worst behaviours of nerds that had no glimmer of hope, humour or fun for me. There was, however a nice rendering of a d6.

Stack Clean: Legacy of Luther Strode #1

I'm not the target audience for many of the comics I got in the grab bag that make up what's left in my stack. Legacy of Luther Strode #1 was just hollow for me; the art didn't do anything for me, the dialog and story didn't draw me in and I was just waiting for an end.

Stack Clean: The Multiversity: Pax Americana #1

I've liked the Grant Morrison comics I've read before, but I wasn't sure I had the appetite for his take on Watchmen in The Multiversity: Pax Americana #1. The comic is well done, with beautiful art by Frank Quitely and some really compelling playing with form and storytelling.

I'll take any opportunity to celebrate Dungeons & Dragons, but I've never watched Rick and Morty or read anything based on the show. The comic is a love letter to D&D, and I think it's successful in expressing some of what is great about the game, but I don't think the
