After police penned a radical demonstration calling for political reform in Clerkenwell, a battle followed, which left 1 police officer dead. The inquest jury brought in a verdict of ‘Justifiable Homicide’ on the grounds that police had attacked the people.
The enraged coroner locked the jury in to try to force them to change their verdict, to no avail… The verdict stood. The juries were feted throughout the year by the radical movement…
