I am untarring a 205 Gbyte file onto a disk array of spinning HDDs and wow is it roaring. I'd forgotten what it was like to work in a room with that sound always going.

Meanwhile I'm quite behind on processing some #photos from some larger events I've been to, nothing professional, just hobby work, but it still stresses me out whenever I think about it.
By happenstance, two more of those events were this past weekend.
After taking a bunch of photos on Friday, I did the shopping Saturday, got home and started testing the disks and they finished one round of full surface testing just yesterday. [ continued ]

Slow though they may be, hard disk drives are amazing. #SSD s are cool and all, but how often do you find one that's old enough to drive a car and still functioning perfectly?

WD barely won but I think I'm ignoring 3 of you anyway and going for Exos โ€‹โ€‹ Now I'm deciding between:

5x Exos x20* 20T (a single raid-z2 60G pool for bulk smb/nfs and iscsi and jails and..) *late edit, was accidentally x16
or
3x Exos x16 14T (raid-z1, 28T for
#k3s iscsi PVs) plus 5 exos x14 10T (raid-z2, 30T for bulk file storage and db jails)

The difference between them is only about $10 and 2T loss of usable bulk space, but there might be an advantage to moving the
#k3s cluster pvs and such away from the bulk nfs/samba archival storage.

I can't use the entire pool with iscsi because its huge and my clusters aren't, but in general it would be nice to have more variety in storage options. (Z2 vs Z1 depending on value/performance)

Please jump in and tell me why I'm wrong before I spend all of my money screwing up.

Are WD Red still the best home NAS drives? It is years past replacement time on my existing drives so I am eyeing 10T.

Yesterday I stood up an old storage unit and in the process raided my "spare" hw pile. It turns out that I still have two dead 8T reds from circa 2015. Click click click click CLANK click click click... Nada.

The older (but still contemporary) Seagates work fine, but I don't trust Seagate. Many years ago their tech support unironically told me to replace their drives every year, so I replaced them with WD for a decade or so

Who is today's best rust provider?
Boosts welcome!

@ostueker @arstechnica I thought #HGST was still a thing these days? Or have they bowed out of the #spinningrust industry?

Well, here they are.

One was shipped in a carboard sleeve, inside a bubble mailer. (yes, really)

The other was shipped in a reasonably-sized box wrapped in a boatload of bubble wrap.

Will either of them work? Will they make cool noises? Will either one fail dramatically in a puff of smoke? Who knows! I'll find out tomorrow when they've had a chance to thaw!
