This brief highlights how everyday speech patterns—such as pauses and “ums”—can reflect executive functioning, a core domain linked to memory, planning, and flexible thinking. For clinicians across mental health settings, this connection underscores a noninvasive cue that may inform assessments of cognitive health and early indicators of cognitive decline, prompting timely evaluation and conversations with clients about cognitive aging.

Vocal fry doesn't bother me in the least, and critiques of it largely come down to patriarchal bullshit, because it's all over traditionally masculine-associated speech patterns (god forbid a woman creak), but a high-rising terminal, regardless of who's speaking, will never fail to make the speaker sound stupid.

I just watched a video about #VocalFry / #CreakyVoice and I have to say, unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I like it.

I think I do it a fair bit as well, as it sounds good to me and means I don't need to say "um" as a filler while I construct the next thing I'm going to say.

Also, I learned in school that varied speech was better than monotonal speech, mostly from the example provided by monotonal teachers.
