Something I value about having spent most of my life with a low income is that I can never forget how stacked the system is against anyone who's not well off—we are penalized for not having money, punished for not having money, and kept behind a well-cultivated barrier between us and ever moving up. My personal fortunes have improved, but I will always know what I know, and that's that Western culture is tilted to the rich. Fuck 'em all.

What keeps me from veering from grumpiness about my species to outright nihilism, even when an awful lot of people seem to make dumb choices, is that it's not the fault of our individual lives that evolution built us to be riddled with security flaws in how we process the world around us, so bad ideas can easily infect us. I love my dentist and endodontist, but my inability to ever be numbed by any amount of anaesthesia in my molars short-circuited my dentist visit today and I'm mad at fish for inventing nerves in teeth. ARGH.
