What would Winston Churchill make of war with Iran?

When Donald Trump criticised Keir Starmer for failing to sufficiently support American and Israeli operations against Iran, he did so with a historical flourish. “This is not Winston Churchill that we’re dealing with,” he complained. The implication was clear: Churchill would have stood shoulder to shoulder with Washington in a confrontation with Tehran. The remark […]

The King’s Speech: A Royal Masterclass in Diplomatic Evisceration

On 28 April 2026, King Charles III stood before a joint session of Congress and delivered twenty minutes of perfectly calibrated diplomatic napalm. Ah, the Special Relationship. Is it a hashtag? Probably not. #SpecialRelationship, referring to the unique friendship and international comity that purportedly exists between the United States and Great Britain. Even as the U.S. is experiencing its flagrant fascist meltdown, the leaders and influencers of Great Britain continue to stick by the privileged status on the international stage which is supposedly accorded to the United Kingdom by virtue of her special relationship with the United States of America, the ruler of the Free World.

Such is the gospel that I learned while growing up in the 1980s U.S. when the Special Relationship™ was embodied by the twin grotesques President Ronald Reagan of the United States and PM Margaret Thatcher of the British Conservative Party. The two of them were constantly in the news together, on television together, reinforcing each other's glamour of absolute authority over their respective nations.

It was like Maggie was Ronnie's mum. It was weird and gross and all hep persons knew that. PM Thatcher made Ronnie Raygun look infantile in comparison, and somehow...that was all according to plan. It was paradoxically effective symbolism.
