Sleep (feat. Social State), by Mr. Mitch

from the album Lazy

Mr. Mitch
Culture is a weird thing. Germany is a capitalist nation. Yes it's a social democracy. Yes it's more socialized than the US but it's still a capitalist grind culture. However the way Germany approaches this is very different.

In the US humans are replaceable. You are like every other commodity. Your obsolescence is planned for and desired. New iphone or new employee, the difference is only moderate. In Germany it's more of a repair system. You are an integral part of the machine and if that machine and all of it's parts are not maintained the machine fails.

Here's an example. In the US I've had family members die, animals die, been around more active shootings than I care to recall. In every case I was expected to perform at peak efficiency without pause or leave. No doctor could really get me time free and it would basically assure my loss of job and eviction as a result.

Here not only did my Eastern European coworkers weep with me because nonatomic family retains power there but when I burned my foot with boiling water and knew I couldn't both grieve and work at once I talked to my boss and did the adult thing and said I could go to the Doctor and get an Entschuldigung if you need but I can't work now. She told me she needed to think (überlegen is actually also deliberate and consider) of a solution and how much time she could give/that I needed. WHILE my coworker that could easily replace me is on vacation. So /she/ had to work my station. The boss and owner worked my station for me so I could recover for the weekend.

We learn in German course that Germany is a "Sozialstaat" a social state. That there are systems here in place to aid everyone. To aid and protect the working class. I'd still argue that needs work but it's not any less surprising to go from easily replaceable to needing care, pause and maintenance to continue the work of the German machine
