New blog post: SilverBullet macros I use

#SilverBullet is a note-taking tool that can be as simple or complex as you want. You can use it as a single editable Markdown page, or as a some kind of a content management system with a built-in relational database.

I mostly do simple pages linking to each other but there are some macros I keep reusing. Let me share them.

@Klif

I've been struggling with this for 30 years. Physical notebooks, apps, platforms, you name it.
Trello was the best contender for a long time but it enshittified and its too specific to tasks>lists>boards, sometimes I need to free form.

Past year or so I've been self-hosting #silverbullet. Browser based markdown OneNote / Obsidian equivalent - fewer features than those but dirt simple, reliable and programmable/extensible/scriptable. If I have a device, I have my notes. And the self-hosting is rather nice.

Downside, unlike some other apps/platforms if something has a due date or needs a reminder, silverbullet doesn't come with that or notifications out of box (Im sure one could script something)

No matter what I choose though, I find I have to discipline myself to periodically go and refresh and update and prune. Otherwise lists get too long --> ugh this list ill never finish -> start new list -> repeat.

New post: The Markdown Link no. 38

Among today’s links are markdown editors Ulysses, Markdown Mate, Bokuchi, Rook, Editxr and Marka.md

Experimenting with more heavily applying the "docs as code" philosophy for @[email protected]. Of course silverbullet.md has always been the website/ folder of the repo published as a read-only #SilverBullet instance, but there were more features to leverage.

Now retroactively writing ADRs with some of the key architectural decisions made along the years. Overview page is here: https://edge.silverbullet.md/ADR nicely using various SB query features (click the edit buttons on each table to see the underlying queries).

@davidak @strubbl @silverbulletmd @obsidian Excuse me: IMO the #Markdown approach is broken beyond repair: https://www.karl-voit.at/2025/08/17/Markdown-disaster/

Use any other markup language that doesn't come with the #MD chaos. I do have a particular recommendation but you could choose a different one. We're at a point where almost any other LML is better than MD. 😉

YMMV

If you still insist on MD, I'd have a look on #Silverbullet since the project is open about the MD issues: https://silverbullet.md/Markdown

Welcome to No SilverBullet — No SilverBullet

No SilverBullet — short notes on building SilverBullet, end-user programming, and the ideas behind a programmable notebook.

@silverbulletmd @alerque Okay I spent some time setting up #Silverbullet and it can do some pretty cool things. The scriptability is very nice, you can make your own buttons and more. Unfortunately, our wiki is currently in GitLab Markdown, and Silverbullet can't render several crucial elements we use:

- icons/images in headlines
- collapsible <details>
- non-monospace font
- those ;penguin: → 🐧 emojis

So everything looks pretty terrible compared to GitLab. 🫤

I've been exploring what more I can do with #SilverBullet's underlying indexing capability. Here's a few minute demo of the "object graph" plug I've been playing with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jw5-mi0cPE
