Tijdens mijn eerste IFFR In 2006 heb ik voor het eerst een film van Sharunas Bartas gezien. In het koude, ondertussen niet meer bestaande zaaltje Venster (niet te verwarren met bioscoop LantarenVenster). Ik ben elk jaar teruggekomen, maar Bartas heeft sindsdien nooit meer een nieuwe film mogen presenteren in Rotterdam. Tot nu. Meditatie over ontsnappen aan je verleden. Of niet.

A Casa is perhaps the most visually stunning film I've ever encountered. Time stands still in this mansion. Yet present is too fleeting: one can't be sure if it really exists. There is something deeper at work here. The shadows of USSR still lingering in those soulful faces who in habit the place. They speak thousand words w/ their stares. And no one captures Eastern European melancholy like Bartas. The film climaxes with the Christmas Supper scene & fireworks. #lithuaniancinema #SharunasBartas
