Mastodon is #dialogue, not broadcasting; replying is its natural #posting mode.
When following a person, I don't rely on seeing their "original" posts on my Home timeline. Instead I visit their profile and check out their replies. I do that regularly.
My own posts are perhaps 90% replies, 10% "original" posts. Some of my replies I also #selfBoost; this does feel a little awkward, but it is what John Mastodon wants us to do.
@multiverseofbadness I think it's okay to #selfboost for a little while yet. The community is still finding itself out after a big shift. Self promotion in a small pond is a good way to get a little notice. It's the uncertainty of clearing your throat in a crowded room. Pretty soon you don't need to, and if you do every time you speak, it'll wear thin sooner or later. Organic pruning and negotiation by the crowd over time is most of the solution, maybe?
