I enjoy watching photos of Helsinki in the late 1800s and early 1900s and I sometimes think about taking photos at the same locations a century later. It could be a cool project. Of course the city has changed a lot since then, but there are still plenty of places that have not – especially in downtown Helsinki. However, I have never really bothered to do this kind of photography.
So, what are these two photos from Seurasaari then? A coincidence. I saw the second photo recently on a website that showcases material from Finnish museums. (The photo is originally from the Helsinki City Museum and in public domain.) It was taken in the 1920s. I was certain that I had taken a photo at that very spot at least once. It turned out I had. The one you see is from October 2025.
The Scots pine on the left, it must be the same tree. I know these stunted pines growing on cliffs can be old but... I think it was already old in the 1920s. Huh...
