New countryside site opens to protect #heathlands

by Katie Waple, 2 November 2025

"A new countryside site has opened in Dorset in an attempt to protect important heathlands.

"The Suitable Alternative Natural #Greenspace, located just outside Bere Regis and near the A35, has been funded by contributions from developers collected by Dorset Council.

"It is part of #WildWoodbury, Dorset Wildlife Trust's pioneering rewilding initiative covering 170 hectares and making it England's first large-scale community rewilding project.

"Dorset Council said it was a 'brilliant example of how we can balance nature recovery with public access'.

"The space features car parking, dog waste bins and walking paths that meander through open glades and emerging woodland.

"While the area is currently grassland, it is being allowed to gently return to its natural state with minimal intervention, while maintaining walking paths.

"A #FoodForest is being planted with fruiting trees and bushes, and a large #CommunityTable will provide a space for people to gather, share and learn.
#BereRegisPrimarySchool and local residents have played a central role in shaping the design of the space, ensuring it reflects the needs and aspirations of the village.

"Dorset Council leader Nick Ireland said:
'It provides an alternative recreational area that helps protect nearby heathland, home to many of Dorset's most treasured wildlife species. Funding collected from developers when new homes or buildings are constructed, has enabled the creation of this valuable green space for the community.

"This is a great demonstration of how development and conservation can work together.' "

A Morning in Layers

Yesterday’s morning light was something else — the kind of light that shifts the entire mood of a landscape. I started early, camera in hand, watching as the first rays of sun broke through the horizon at the Loonse en Drunense Duinen. The Canon 5DsR with the Sigma 24–70 Art captured that dance between storm clouds and sunlight — a fiery sky meeting cold, dark clouds above a golden line of dunes.

Later that morning, a flash of movement caught my eye. Perched high in a tree, a Lanius excubitor — the Great Grey Shrike (Klapekster in Dutch) — scanned the landscape. A master of patience and precision, this bird is both predator and poet of the heathlands. Just as I focused, it launched into flight, wings twisting into the sunlight — a single frame of balance between control and freedom, taken with the 5D Mark IV and the Sigma 100–400.

Before heading home, I found a small Mycena mushroom rising from a bed of moss, surrounded by acorn caps and fallen leaves. Humble, delicate — yet part of the same story. The sun, the bird, the fungus — each a layer in nature’s quiet symphony.

The first light at sunrise just shines on the top of the sandstone cliffs at one of my favourite parts of the Blue Mountains.
