It's mostly bike shedding. Some are comfortable running a lab of 20+ people. Others prefer a small team of 2-3, with perhaps themselves on the benches as well. And everything in between. Depends very much on the combination of project and person leading the lab, limited by institutional and funding constraints.

I must add that my question was targeting established researchers, more than PhD and postdocs. Unfortunately the way their CVs are evaluated requires them to be "international" to be competitive. This is something we also have to change quickly. #sciencechat

For scientists folks: how many of you have considered never taking a plane for work again? Or let's say, allowing maybe 1 short trip every 5 years and 1 long trip every 10 years? Another way to put it is: do you consider your field and your contribution important enough not to reduce drastically your emissions, as recommended? #sciencechat
