Regulation Needed as AI Pioneer Bengio Prioritizes Safer Applications #AIethics

Yoshua Bengio, an artificial intelligence pioneer and winner of the A.M. Turing Award, announced that he will redirect his research to focus on AI applications that are safe for society. Bengio expressed concerns about the potential dangers of AI, stating that regulations and precautions need to be in place to prevent catastrophic consequences. On the other hand, fellow AI pioneers Yann LeCun and Melanie Mitchell argued that AI can be used for good and lacks the ability to make decisions that pose existential threats. Ottawa is also considering the adoption of an artificial intelligence and data act to regulate AI use.
