After five days hiking in the mountains, I ventured onto the wild beaches of Olympic National Park.
An approaching storm added a dramatic touch to an already rugged landscape.
Driftwood, pebbles, starfish… Unforgettable memories.

A lone adventurer walks the stony shore of Ruby Beach, dwarfed by towering sea stacks that rise from the surf like ancient guardians of the Pacific. The distant cliff, robed in coastal evergreens, holds the memory of wind and wave in every crevice. It’s a moment suspended in wild majesty where land, sea, and sky converge

I spent Memorial Day weekend camping at the beach with a couple of friends, on Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula. We were fortunate to have had fantastic weather the first two days (never a guarantee here this time of year), and I had a great time shooting while we explored the area.

We went up to Kalaloch Beach to see the Tree of Life, and also hit Ruby Beach at sunset. The air at Ruby Beach was filled with mist from the crashing waves, lit golden by the sun. One of the sea stacks had a hole in it, through with the sunlight was positively streaming, and the shot I got of it is now up in my store as Poseidon’s Door.

I also turned my lens on smaller things I found lying in the sand, and got a long exposure night shot to round things out.

I hope your Memorial Day weekend was equally pleasant!

I remember the last time I visited Ruby Beach, my first time in Olympic when I went with my parents back in 2017. My dad and I climbed across all of the washed up logs and waded in the water to see tidepools in the summer. I was 24.

This time around I got to revisit alone, driving along unplowed snowy roads at 6 in the morning. I climbed over the logs covered in snow, watched the sea anemones in the tide pools, and watched surf scoters dive for mussels. I can't explain how thrilling it is to visit the same place again and find something new in every season or even every week. People that check places off bucket lists and never return are missing out on a lot of chances to find awe and inspiration.

Ruby Beach is still lovely even on a cold drizzly, foggy PNW day. #Rubybeach #pnwbeaches
