I kind of figured out the issue with DWMC I think, but it’s still not making me optimistic. Turns out the console doesn’t instantly crash #RMMZ games on Windows, so I was able to find a series of errors where it “can’t read resolution of null” in pixi.js.

Pixi.js is a standard framework included in RPG Maker/NWJS that I have never needed to touch. I haven’t added or changed anything involving pixi.js in years. I’ve even replaced my frameworks with the stock version to make sure it’s using the intended defaults. The fact that it suddenly can’t read one of its most core framework scripts is a sign of how terribly RPG Maker erodes over time.

I’m inclined to think all of this started due to recent Windows/MacOS updates that patched some pretty significant web rendering vulnerabilities. It seems possible that some change made to address those vulnerabilities affected something that pixi was using to function.

I would have such a better time making my game in #RMMZ if it were actually possible to debug the code…….. instead I’m ballz deep in an ecosystem of obfuscated code where I just have to put up with bugs and features in updates forced on me by the unhelpful developers.

I’m always like “oh I just need to finish this game so I can move on to a better engine where I can actually work with debuggable code” so I open up my project to work on it, playtest for a little bit to warm myself up, then am faced with some BS I literally cannot change, so I just close the project and grumble. If only getting away from this stupid ecosystem didn’t mean effectively starting from scratch.
