#Iran was historically called #Persia in English, as it is normal to use the word established in one's own language (e.g., Spain not España). #RezaShah, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1935, insisted "Iran" be used, as he was keen to link his country to the #Nazis' "#Aryan" mythology.
#Qajar-era #Iran was a failed state, which made foreign exploitation endemic but policing difficult. With British aid, #RezaKhan led a coup on #ThisDayInHistory in 1921. Four years later he deposed the last Qajar ruler and became #RezaShah, borrowing Turkish modernization ideas.
Showing one of the ways #AuthoritarianModernism can backfire, #RezaShah's #KashfEHijabDecree was issued #ThisDayInHistory in 1936, banning the wearing of #hijab & #chador in public. The backlash meant it lasted just just years, but the reactionary right was helped by the mistake.
