The Igreja de São Bartolomeu de Vila Viçosa was founded in 1636 as the church of the Jesuit College of São João Evangelista, which had been active since the second half of the 16th century. The façade was finished in 1698, but work was still underway in 1759. The towers remain unfinished.

THE STEPS OF VILA
VIÇOSA #vilaviçosa #portugal

The Chapels of the Steps, five in number (I have four posted), were built to allow the #stationsofthecross procession to be carried out.

In 1610 Duke Teodósio II visited them barefoot during Lent. From 1741 onward, they were improved with marble porticos, and the murals were replaced by tiles depicting the life of Christ, all in the #baroque style

Parish Church of São Martinho.
Dating from the medieval period, the Parish Church was rebuilt in 1520 by the Military Order of Christ (formerly known as Knights Templar) and remodelled in 1816 by the Captain General of Pombal, Jorge Coelho de Vasconcelos Botelho, after being devastated by the French troops in 1811.
