It's not without its flaws, but if you've made it this far in the series, it's worth finishing it out.

A ★★★½ review of Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1983 (2009)

It's wrapped up a bit too patly and it suffers from the same issue as the second in terms of a relationship subplot that serves no real purpose. But Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1983 otherwise has the same strengths as the previous two entries and is worth checking out if you've made it this far in the series. Great acting -- this time with Mark Addy joining the cast in a great role -- and strong period elements, with incredibly dark themes about police corruption and much, much worse this time around.

While it lacks the seedy quality of the first entry, this is still a very solid neo-noir about police corruption and what it allows to flourish. My ★★★½ review of Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1980 (2009) on Letterboxd: https://boxd.it/3TnKTV #RedRiding #Letterboxd
A ★★★½ review of Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1980 (2009)

Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1980 is a less satisfying film than its 1974-set predecessor, if only by the fewest of degrees. There's still a lot of good here; to be clear. James Marsh's second chapter of the Red Rising trilogy has a bit more overt of a focus thanks to the narrative coalescing around the Yorkshire Ripper investigation, albeit in fictionalized form. It also features very good performances by Paddy Considine as Peter Hunter, the Assistant Chief Constable brought in to oversee the stalled investigation, and Sean Harris as the rather odious Yorkshire copper assigned to assist.

Finished this - and the #RedRiding quartet - yesterday. #1983 is, I think, the weaker of the four, the ending doesn’t quite have the same bite as the previous installments. And the split timeline was a little confusing/distracting in places. But, taken as a whole, this series is an outstanding example of modern, inventive, grimy #noir at its very best. #DavidPeace has a distinctive and unique voice.

But, boy, it is a tough read.
