Half-way through the final instalment of The Red Riding Quartet by #DavidPeace and, boy, is it a tough read. And that’s from someone who inclined towards noir, horror, and transgressive literature. It is well written, but so so bleak: every character is compromised and it is clear, from the outset, that nothing will go well.
Oh, and #Rochdale, just down the road from here, gets a brief mention. So I’ll sleep well knowing that very bad things happen not too far from where I sleep :) #reading

Finished this - and the #RedRiding quartet - yesterday. #1983 is, I think, the weaker of the four, the ending doesn’t quite have the same bite as the previous installments. And the split timeline was a little confusing/distracting in places. But, taken as a whole, this series is an outstanding example of modern, inventive, grimy #noir at its very best. #DavidPeace has a distinctive and unique voice.

But, boy, it is a tough read.
