One More Effort, Let’s Free Georges Abdallah! — Red Help International

Twenty two years ago, the International Red Help started their campaigns for the release of Georges Abdallah, who was already in his 18th year of detention. We have never ceased to play our part in it, just as George never abandoned his resistance, never ceased to embody the struggle against imperialism, the struggle for a free, democratic, secular and socialist Palestine from the Sea to the Jordan.

The extension of his detention is one of the manifestations of the French state’s support for the colonial and genocidal state of Israel. The history of the FARL is precisely that of the attack on this link between the complicit interests of imperialism and the crimes of Zionism. It is this double heritage of the Arab revolutionary left and of the international anti-imperialist struggle that the French state wanted to bury with these decades of blackmail to renounce.

Campaigns of solidarity with Georges have seen several generations of activists engage, the last of whom were not born when Georges became eligible for release in 1999. They form a long history of solidarity, tenacity, and sometimes wear and tear too, you have to know how to see it. The decision of 15 November by the enforcement court to order Georges’ release as of 6 December highlighted the importance of the support campaign. The prosecutor’s office has appealed, of course, and the decision is due on February 20.

This is not the first time that we believe we have reached the goal. We have not forgotten the maneuver of Manuel Valls, Minister of the Interior of the Socialist Party in 2013 who, by refusing to sign the deportation order of Georges, had by a turn this administrative sleight of hand hindered the previous decision of the court to release Georges. It is for this reason that we are calling for a new impetus of mobilization on February 19.

What can we learn from this? Together with the Budapest Solidarity Group from Berlin and the journalist Matthias Monroy, we want to shed light on the persecution of antifascists in Hungary, analyse how this has changed across Europe with the shift to the right, and how German authorities are also directing their repression at antifascists shortly before the AfD's possible claim to power.

Society is drifting further and further to the right. This also increases the pressure against #antifascists. Again and again, anti-fascist resistance is being criminalised with long prison sentences, even though the AfD is not even in power yet.

A look at #Hungary gives a foretaste of what could still come. Viktor Orbán and his right-wing Fidesz party have been in power there for 14 years. Nazis can move around freely, while anti-fascists who take action against them are harshly persecuted.

In January, anti-fascist Ilaria Salis was led into the courtroom in #budapest in chains - pictures that went around the world.

Human rights activists warn that no fair trials can be expected for the other defendants in Hungary.

Bertold Brecht, The Decision

Over the weekend of March 23-24, Red Help International held its half-yearly conference in Zurich.

Our work was marked by the news of Daniela Klette’s arrest in Berlin, and even more by the significance of this arrest and the reactions it provoked.

This decades-long clandestinity, in a state where the police, with so many resources, made this issue a priority, is an achievement. Such clandestinity is, by proxy, the pride of the entire revolutionary movement, and a lesson in intelligence, method and determination.

The number of demonstrations of sympathy for Daniela, Ernst-Volker and Burkhard shows that this sentiment is widely shared, making the regime’s representatives all the more enraged.

Beyond the RAF underground, many other comrades have made the difficult and courageous choice to go underground, rather than submit to or negotiate with class justice. This is the case of many antifascists prosecuted for various crimes (Antifa Ost, Budapest).

These wanted comrades must also be protected and helped in every way possible.

Their struggle against fascism is a central one in this historic period of crisis and war, from Berlin to Diarbakir. The antifa movement is well aware that the fight against fascism, from white-collar institutional fascism to neo-Nazi militias, has once again become an essential frontline.

The structures of the regime (political, police, judicial and media) want to break this anti-fascist dynamic, as they do any dynamic of resistance, because it is in resistance that revolutionary prospects are forged.
The fact that Daniela was immediately placed in solitary confinement, the same solitary confinement used against Alfredo Cospito, Nadia Lioce and the other brigadistas detained in the special sections, is further proof of this desire.

We must oppose this relentlessness with solidarity.

“Making solidarity a weapon” is a program, not a slogan.

Red Help International calls on all to support the wanted comrades in every way, and to demonstrate this commitment by taking part in an international day of action on April 14, the day of a solidarity demonstration with Daniela Klette outside Vechta prison.

Strength and solidarity with Ernst-Volker, Burkhard and the underground antifas.

Freedom for all revolutionary, anti-fascist and anti-imperialist prisoners.

Freedom for prisoners of the Palestinian Resistance facing torture in Zionist prisons.

Freedom for all peoples facing fascism and colonialism, in Palestine, Kurdistan and around the world.

Long live international solidarity.
