"Record-high temperatures reach eastern Europe

"Additional countries are facing record-breaking temperatures as the core of the heat shifts to eastern Europe, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

"According to Anadolu English, a Turkish-based news organization, #Poland recorded an all-time high of 40.5 C (104.9 F) on Sunday, breaking a 105-year-old record. The Polish capital of Warsaw has also implemented public misting stations to mitigate the risk of dehydration and heatstroke.

"Temperatures in multiple countries also reached the triple digits last week, reported the U.K. Met Office, including #Spain, #Germany, the #CzechRepublic, the #Netherlands and #Switzerland.

"AccuWeather Meteorologist Jason Nicholls explained this heat wave is 'historic' because normal highs in #Paris and #Frankfurt are in the low 70s, meaning these cities have experienced 10 days with temperatures 18-30 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.

WHO warns extreme heat is becoming the new normal

"Leaders from the World Health Organization (WHO) have also noted the significance of the 'once-in-a-generation' heat wave that is now occurring nearly every year due to #ClimateChange and #Global Warming.

" 'Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average,' WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X Sunday. 'Right now, 150 million people are living under #ExtremeHeat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling.' "

#France records around 1,000 additional deaths as #ExtremeHeat breaks European records 🌡️ 🥵

By KIRSTEN GRIESHABER and JOHN LEICESTER
Updated 9:30 PM EDT, June 28, 2026

BERLIN (AP) — "France saw around 1,000 additional deaths last week at the height of its record-smashing heat wave, the country’s public health agency said Sunday, as the head of the World Health Organization warned that Europe is now the fastest-warming continent and needs to do more to protect its citizens.

"Temperature records were toppled in several countries on the weekend, #wildfires were sparked in #Germany and Berlin police used water cannons to cool down the crowds.

"Meanwhile, the heat wave slowly moved toward eastern parts of the continent.

"Germany marked a new record for the third day in a row with 41.7 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Fahrenheit) in #NeiĂźemĂĽnde, near the border with #Poland, which baked under its new all-time high of 40.5 C (104.9 F). The #CzechRepublic also experienced its hottest day ever with 41.9 C (107.4 F), up from the previous record of 40.9 degrees Celsius (105.6 F) on Saturday.

"A new study from the World Weather Attribution, a Europe-based collaboration of scientists, reported Friday that the record-breaking heat and humidity in Europe this past week would not have been possible without #ClimateChange.

"The rapid study found that the heat would have been virtually impossible just five decades ago, and is 200 times more likely today than it would have been 20 years ago."

Some 1,000 additional heat deaths recorded in France

France has reported around 1,000 additional deaths during last week’s record-breaking heat wave. Extreme temperatures also sparked wildfires in Germany and Berlin police used water cannons to cool down crowds. Temperature records were broken across several countries as the heat wave moved east. A study from the World Weather Attribution suggests climate change made this heat wave 200 times more likely. And the head of the World Health Organization warned that Europe is now the fastest-warming continent and needs to do more to protect its citizens.

Deaths, disruptions across #Europe: What you should know about the #heatwave

Experts say the #ClimateCrisis is making Europe’s #heatwaves more frequent and more intense.

By Caolán Magee

Excerpt: "What is causing the heatwave?

"Meteorologists said the extreme temperatures are driven by a heat dome, a vast area of high pressure that has become parked over Western Europe.

"The phenomenon is being sustained by what is known as an omega block, a weather pattern named for the Greek letter because of the similar shape it creates in the atmosphere.

"Under normal conditions, the jet stream carries weather systems from west to east. During an omega block, however, that flow becomes distorted, trapping a ridge of high pressure between two low-pressure systems.

"The result is that hot, stagnant air remains locked over the same region for days or even weeks. The UK Met Office said Britain currently lies on the boundary between the high-pressure system and cooler air to the northwest, which is creating sharp contrasts between hotter conditions in the south and east and cooler, wetter weather farther north."

#Japan marks highest-ever temperature of 41.2 C in #Hyogo

By Tomoko Otake, Jul 30, 2025

"Japan recorded the highest ever temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, beating the previous high of 41.1 C marked in 2018 and 2020. Authorities are strongly urging people to take precautions to avoid risks of heatstroke.

"The mercury hit the above-human temperature of 41.2 C in the city of Tanba, Hyogo Prefecture, at 14:39, while two cities — #Fukuchiyama in #Kyoto and #Nishiwaki in Hyogo — also recorded extremely high temperatures of 40.6 C and 40 C, respectively.

"Wednesday marked the first day this year that temperatures topping 40 C were recorded, according to NHK. Last year, the city of Mino, Gifu Prefecture, hit that mark on Aug. 16.

"As human-induced climate change drives extreme heat across Japan, the number of people taken to hospitals over heat-related illnesses had surged to 10,804 in the week through Sunday, a huge jump from 5,309 recorded the week before, according to the Fire Management Agency. By prefecture, Tokyo topped the list of such people, at 1,099, followed by Saitama’s 750 and Hokkaido’s 690.

"In Hokkaido, where many people are not acclimated to heat, the number was a significant increase from 247 recorded in the same week last year.

"The agency is urging people to use air conditioners and cooling fans properly and take fluids frequently.

"The ongoing heat wave is likely to continue for several more days. According to the Meteorological Agency, a Pacific high-pressure system will cover much of Japan from Saturday through Monday, bringing extreme heat to wide areas."
