undefined | Tesla wins Dutch approval to use self-driving features, a first for Europe
Tesla owners in the Netherlands have become the first in Europe to be allowed to use Tesla’s Full Self‑Driving (Supervised) feature. The Dutch vehicle‑type approval agency (RDW) announced that, provided the driver remains in the seat and keeps a watchful eye on the system, the driver‑assistance function—covering steering, braking, navigation and parking—can be activated on Dutch roads. The decision mirrors the United States’ rules for the same feature and the agency said the technology has been examined for more than a year and a half on test tracks and public roads, with safety as its top priority.
The RDW stressed that the supervised mode is not full autonomy; the driver must stay ready to take control at any moment, and responsibility for the vehicle remains with the human operator. Tesla’s European subsidiary welcomed the approval, announcing that “FSD Supervised has been approved in the Netherlands & will begin rolling out shortly,” and Elon Musk added congratulations on the platform X. The agency’s decision now awaits endorsement from the European Commission so that the national certification can be recognized across the EU.
The approval comes as Tesla faces a tougher market in Europe, especially in the Netherlands, where sales have slowed amid concerns over Musk’s political activism and increasing competition from Chinese electric‑vehicle makers. Critics note that while the supervised feature offers a new selling point, it also highlights the regulatory and public‑trust challenges Tesla must navigate to expand its advanced driver‑assistance technologies throughout Europe.

This is EXTREMELY upsetting. Dutch streets are very complex places. Lots of pedestrians and cyclists, lots of complex signage, many odd and quirky intersections.
I expect this to kill a lot of people, mostly those outside of cars.
