One particular incident during my civilian service at the NLWKN will remain etched in my memory forever. On 6 November 2007, the freighter Duncan Island lost several containers in rough seas off Terschelling. One of the ship's fuel tanks was damaged, resulting in the loss of at least 90 cubic metres of oil as the ship sailed through the coastal waters of Lower Saxony.

Tordalke sind schwarz-weiße Seevögel mit kurzen Flügeln und dem kräftigen Schnabel, die hier an den Klippen von Látrabjarg in Kolonien brüten. Sie verbringen den Winter wie die Puffins meist auf dem offenen Meer. Ihre Nahrung besteht überwiegend aus kleinen Fischen und Krebstieren.

Der Tordalk, auch Razorbill genannt, ist ein typischer Bewohner der steilen Klippen. Mit seinem markanten, schwarz-weißen Gefieder und dem kräftigen Schnabel fällt er sofort auf. Er taucht geschickt nach Fischen und ist meist in kleinen Kolonien unterwegs.

A Razorbill (Alca torda) beak. This adult was killed and eaten by a Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) with just the beak left behind. A bit grizzly but a perfect chance to get a closer look. The feathers feel like velvet!!
