This makes my map *slightly* more usable because with Marble’s coordinate grid, you can now pan the globe around and actually visualize the #qibla as meridians. This is even more apparent if you switch to Marble’s azimuthal equidistant projection (pictured), which is the usual way this sort of maps are depicted.

(Of course, nobody would really use this solution to locate the qibla, there are plenty of mobile apps that use the GPS and compass sensors for that!)

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 2️⃣3️⃣: 3D

(Almost caught up!)

After creating the previous day’s plate carrée #qibla map, I remembered that this map projection is popular as a texture format when rendering 3D spheres and used in apps like @kde’s Marble,¹ NASA World Wind, and Celestia.²

So I opened Marble, created a new theme using my map, et voilà! We now have an undistorted world map with #Mecca as the north pole! 💪

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 2️⃣2️⃣: North is not always up 🧭

For this theme, I didn’t want to just turn the map 180° and then slap on a North arrow pointing down, or use a polar azimuthal projection.

So I finally settled on depicting an equirectangular world map where the #qibla, the direction towards #Mecca 🕌 where praying Muslims face, is all up, making the Kaaba 🕋 this map’s “north pole”. The countries are in a choropleth coloring where 100% Muslim ☪️ population is dark blue and 0% is yellow.
