The ancient Phoenicians discovered that a particular species of sea snail, called Murex, could be used to make a vibrant purple dye. But it was so labor intensive - requiring thousands of snails just to dye a single garment - that only the wealthiest people could afford it. This is why purple became known as the “color of royalty.”
