My local #CarBrain councillor is back in. 🫤

Is it still reasonable to call it "representative" or even a "democracy", if only 21% of eligible voters bother to vote?
🤔

Originally tooted yesterday as a reply but for better visibiility here it goes again:

https://policy.nz/2025 Local Gov NZ - public info

https://paultheotherone.com/lg25/ - guide to regional councils and red flag spotting

https://ratepayer.vote/ - Taxpayers Union candidate endorsement (kiss of death, from my point of view).. a check here is a bad candidate in my book.

AUCKLAND

CANTERBURY - Vote for clean drinking water
https://www.greenpeace.org/aotearoa/freshwater/vote-clean-drinking-water/

These are just the ones I used to inform my vote (thanks again @Kay ) but remember to check for any groups advocating for the things you care about in your community and use them to guide you.

Lastly, if you still cant decide who to vote for, go for whoever is more likely to defeat the worst candidates you'd like to vote against.

Do Participate if you can!
Voting alone is not going to solve this but we definitely need to use any tools at our disposal and not participating can and will make things worse.

Please comment with any other resources you've found or your approach to choosing the least worst when there is no best.
#democracy or what's left of it.

I am contractually obligated to remind people voting in Canterbury that Greenpeace put out a Nitrate scorecard for safe drinking water and you should use it to inform your vote:

Vote clean drinking water - Greenpeace Aotearoa - Greenpeace Aotearoa

It's time to speak up and vote clean drinking water in the local elections! Here's how you can get involved with Greenpeace's campaign.

Greenpeace Aotearoa

Had a really hard time deciding who to vote FOR. No clearly good options in my electorate unfortunately.

Until I found who I should vote AGAINST.

Not ideal, but hopefully does something to reduce the #CarBrain epidemic in local politics.

Have you voted in this year's #LocalElectionsNZ yet?

#NZPol #poti2025

Of course! Done and dusted.

Not quite yet, but very soon.
33.3%
Nah, won't bother voting.

Finally got our local election voting packs.

Feeling very uninspired by the crop of candidates, particularly for our local board and ward.

There is one dude I know has my vote because he regularly comes to our bike events and is vocally supportive of active/public transport.

There is one dude I know I will oppose because of his repeatedly demonstrated terminal car-brain and votes against cycling improvements.

Everyone else? No idea. Will have to do some research.
