@Wolfenhaus You can always go back to the #Phish40Disappointments

I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since the 20th anniversary run. Here is a piece by @Phanart on it. https://nysmusic.com/2023/11/28/20-years-later-phish-kick-off-20th-anniversary-run-at-nassau-coliseum-november-28-2003/

This run was in many ways the beginning of the end. Sure, there are some spectacular highlights. But it’s largely unbalanced and had a certain dark and druggy feel (not in a good way).

I wrote this about it in the #Phish40Disappointments https://shakedown.social/@chopaganda/109784217192201988

20 Years Later: Phish’s 20th Anniversary Run

I’m particularly proud of my gif use. Also, before you come at me with pitch forks at the end, make sure you’re at the very end.

Attached: 1 image Introducing #Phish40 The Disappointments #RANKED It’s been a while since I put together some fun #Phish content. So over the next couple weeks, I’m going to rank 40 of the most disappointing shows/runs ever. Few notes: Disappoint does not mean worst. It’s a function of quality + expectations. We’re talking about laying eggs in big spots. I started in 1995 bc it was too hard to find true disappointments prior given the above criteria. 10 Honorable mentions up next! #Phish40Disappointments

#Phish40Disappointments #RANKED

#1 8/9/04 Hampton

Here’s what was in queue for #1.

This show was announced as a special edition to the *last shows ever* on July 28—just 12 days in advance. The date was 8/9—Garcia’s death. The venue legendary for both Phish & the GD. WHAT DID IT MEAN!?

Hardcore fans already planning on hitting the final week of shows jumped through hoops and spent $$$$ on last-minute flights. S1 was incredible. But S2 revealed what the show was all about: nothing.

#1 12/31/95 MSG

“It’s the songs, stupid.” - Bill Clinton (1992)

90s fans love to talk about this show as if it’s one of the best ever with 3 sets of stellar versions of classic tunes. But what they fail to mention is it lacks any of the modern #Phish repertoire that tugs at the heart strings in a way the 90s material never could.

Sure, the Reba, Jim, Mike’s, Weekapaug, and YEM were a dream back then. But now we realize there is a life beyond the dream.

#2 New Orleans Jazz Fest 2014

This is a perfectly ordinary festival set. The problem is New Orleans Jazz Fest is no ordinary festival. There’s an unmistakable heritage, sound, and vibe unlike anywhere else. #Phish knows this.

Yet they played Jazz Fest for the first time in 18 yrs w/o a single acknowledgment of the sacred ground they had the privilege of playing. No timely covers, no special guests (with a city full of them), no nothing. Such a disappointment.

#3 Vegas 2004

2.0 was weird. MSG>Hampton was rough. Winter & Summer mostly slayed. Turkey Tour left fans disenchanted only for the band to kill it in Miami. So what would a non-tour 3-night run in Vegas bring?

Disaster. The band was embarrassingly bad. Trey looked terrible & had no voice. Kuroda missed the run. His sub blinded fans w/ strobes. The drug scene was darker than ever.

Soon after, Trey announced the breakup following an ugly but honest Relix review.

#4 10/31/13 Wingsuit

Poor #Phish fans. Band uses Halloween tradition to debut 1st album of new music in 4 yrs—declaring they will not become a nostalgia act. Then band plays 3rd set for the ages. But you expected Eat a Peach. Life is hard.

What was harder? Getting through that “costume” set. It’s fair to respect the intent of Wingsuit while acknowledging the legendary disappointment in the room. If only Wingsuit had less baked songs w/ costumes and lasers…

Programming note:

The #phish40Disappointments will continue with two more tomorrow and then close out with the final two on Thursday.

Only four left! Can you guess what they are?

#5 Coventry

You all knew this one was coming. I could have made it #1, but what fun would that be? Plus, anyone who didn’t expect a disaster was kidding themselves. Though between the traffic, floods, and literally dancing in processed human shit, the experience was far worse than anyone could imagine.

Oddly enough, the music is rather compelling now—knowing the band eventually reunited healthy and happy. But those who went will never forget that “mud.”
