The stage magician Federico the Fraudulent owed his popularity to his gimmick of flamboyantly revealing exactly how his tricks were done. A giant gadget in capacious sleeves was clearly the source of his rainbow scarves, the false bottom on his top hat contrasted with the black silk of the rest of the hat, and so on. Equally entertaining, his stage #patter transitioned from fake Italian accent to fake Russian, then fake German, then fake Arabic. He never lacked for jobs.

“Rae, can you get the girls up? I need to put the finishing touches on my speech,” Claire shouted.

Rae looked at the oven. What to do? The soufflé was at a critical stage, but how could she refuse Miss Claire?

Before she could decide, she heard a #patter of feet, and Aleah and May bounced into the room.

Problem solved,” Rae thought.

“It’s Citizen Day. Hurrah! Hurray!” the kids yelled. Their excitement rose in tandem with the fall of the soufflé.

Definitely solved,” Rae thought, starting omelets.

“I want fried dumplings!” Aleah shouted.

“And bear claws, the kind made with honey and walnuts,” May joined in. It was her favorite festival pastry.

“Why do we have to celebrate this?” Rae groaned. She was usually excited about festivals. She could treat the kids without Claire lecturing her, and later Claire would make up for it by being super mean in the bedroom. “It’s embarrassing, everyone calling me ‘Hero of the Revolution,’ and I have to give speeches at the school.”

Claire was usually the opposite. She disliked the fuss of festivals and Rae’s overexuberance, but she too hated being called a Hero of the Revolution. And the endless patter of empty political speeches was unbearable to listen to. It would’ve been easy to agree with her partner, except contrariness won out. “You mean to say you don’t want to celebrate unmasking Salus and saving me from execution?”

Claire’s golden sausage curls danced, to Rae’s delight, as she tilted her chin and nose into the air.

“Mother Claire is pouting,” Aleah said.

“Is Momma Rae being mean?” May asked.

“Very mean. She thinks it silly to celebrate my escaping death.” Claire dramatically pretended to sob.

The ham acting and evil glint in her eyes would have given things away to anyone older than the girls. Instead, they glared at Rae.

“Well, if they are going to celebrate the new nation, they should do it with fireworks like they did back where I came from,” Rae said.

“Fireworks?” the other three women said all at once. “What’s that?” Claire finished for them.

“There’s no gunpowder, so we can’t do it like back home, but all the fire mages could cast their spells high in the air where they wouldn’t do any harm. It’s called a fireworks show, hanabi.”

The girls began to dance and sing, “Fireworks, fireworks, we want hanabi.”

Sniff, “Now see what you’ve done,” Claire scolded, looking genuinely peeved.

“It won’t be so bad, and it’s pretty,” Rae answered. “The girls can have a public one, and maybe we can have a private show later.” She winked at Clair. “A new tradition.”

Fred woke to the soft #patter of rain.
Not car horns.
Not shouting.
Not thumping bass lines.
Rain.
Stumbling through the cabin, he lit a lantern before stepping out.
High atop a hill he gazed upon smouldering ruins in the gray dawn.
Everyone was dead.
Earth belonged to itself once again.
In a few years there'd be snow again.
Trees would scab over ruined cities.
He'd run out of food and the job would be complete.
Deep down he hoped whomever inherited Earth would be wiser than humanity.

The penguin led the Ranger through the doors and into the back of a huge, dim, warehouse that was divided up into cubicles. It was dingy and had a musky odor mixed with the acrid smell of cleaning solution. The penguin maintained a line of #patter as they walked back.
"Most of the androids we have are in the form of animals," the penguin said, as he waddled along. "Having animal androids was a fad for a while and vast numbers were replicated. But now they've fallen out of fashion." #wss366
