"Echo"
pastel on Pastel Premier (buff) - 9x9 in

It's so quiet, you feel like the trees' soft murmurs may echo in the canyon.

So, who's doing the #ArtAdventCalendar this year?

"Lahontan View"
pastel on UART paper - 12x9 in

Short visit to Lahontan State Park in northern Nevada. There were still some fall colors left, and the afternoon sun was fading quickly. Fall and winter dusks always make me want to hurry home.

"In Silence"
pastel on UART paper (320) - 9x12 in

Late fall, early morning hike. Lights and shadows were beautiful. No wind, no sound. I wish the fall would last longer.
This is on a sanded paper that is coarser grit than what I usually use, and I loved the texture. Great and exciting discovery.

While on the trail, I kept thinking about wanting to paint out there. This is where I really love, and I keep painting parts of this trail (in studio). But in order for me to do a plein air, I would have to drag my painting gear for at least 1 1/2 miles on this narrow and partly steep terrain. I wish I did watercolor; would have been more manageable. I'd have to come up with a smaller setup, maybe no easel. That's a challenge on its own. 2/🧵 #MastoArt #PastelArtist
I thought about this over and over this year. There is a reason why artists do plein air. Because you can't capture the feel, the spark, the air and the smell, and the texture of everything in a photo, especially with a phone camera, with my skills! So you go out with your painting supply (picture Van Gogh running through a golden wheat field with his gear!) and try, try again to capture the "feel." I have to do it while I'm still able.

@tamami so many subdues colors! I love it.
@tamami I was just at a state park where the main feature was a ravine and I couldn’t for the life of me capture the depth of elevation from down inside. The phone camera flattens depth in such a strange way. Also, my husband @joeyomahoney is a beginning watercolorist who created a small plein air setup with a small portable easel. He posts photos from time to time.
@potterybyosa @joeyomahoney Thank you! Yes, phone camera is amazing for letting you take photos anytime anywhere, but there's a limitation. Nothing beats your own eyes and senses! Thanks for the plein air setup tip. I have two different setups but I need to further shrink it down.
