Pawsmonaut Games, the solo studio led by former Rockstar developer Alex Kane, has officially launched AETHUS, an atmospheric, open-world survival game set within the claustrophobic depths of underground mines on an alien planet.

Launched on March 6th 2026, the game has already proven to be a significant commercial success for the Scottish solo development scene. Pawsmonaut founder, Alex Kane has confirmed to SGN that AETHUS has sold more than 15,000 copies in its first week on sale.
Survival in the Abyss
Described by RPS as a blend of the automation seen in Satisfactory and the atmospheric tension of Subnautica, AETHUS puts the player in the role of Maeve, a solo miner working within a vast, interconnected network of long-abandoned tunnels. Survival is not merely about finding oxygen and food; it is about navigating a hostile environment where every resource must be fought for or crafted.
The game features a robust building system, allowing players to establish and upgrade a base of operations that serves as their refuge from the darkness. As players delve deeper into the mine, they must utilise high-tech mining equipment to uncover rare elements and blueprints. These discoveries are essential for upgrading the player’s AI companion, Roland, her exo-suit and tools, enabling further exploration into increasingly dangerous biomes.

The success of AETHUS highlights the specific challenges and opportunities addressed by the Scottish Games Action Plan. The plan is designed to provide dedicated assistance to developers like Alex, ensuring they have access to the funding, business support, and commercialisation skills required to navigate the complexities of modern publishing.
