What's the story?
What may sound like a fairy tale today may be tomorrow's reality. This is a fairy tale from the day after tomorrow:
There are no more nations. There is only mankind and its colonies in space. People have settled on faraway stars. The ocean floor has been made habitable. At speed still unimaginable today, space vessels are rushing through our Milky Way.
One of these vessels is the ORION, a minuscule part of a gigantic security system protecting the Earth from threats from outer space.
Let's accompany the ORION and her crew on their patrol at the edge of infinity. (Voice-over intro of each episode)

Between the 70s and 90s #raumpatrouille had almost as many reruns on telly as classic
#startrek (no, these two are absolutely incomparable⊠colourful Star Trek looks like mega-high budget compared to b/w Space Patrol đ€Ł), which surely is the main reason why I'm a huge fan of both series đ„°
.
Considering the time it was a damn expensive production for western German #ard and French
#ortf with costs per ep of 360.000 DM (which would be ~6 mio ⏠for the 7 episodes today đ€Ż
).
Most of this surely went into special effects and set design, although quite some things of the sets look pretty trashy today đ
, but the series became a major cult over here with a fan base from Scandinavia down to Italy.
Unfortunately the series had to end after 7 eps due to the severely underestimated workload and costs on one side and the accusation of having fascistoid traits on the other side (I think today you must actively wanna see that, because as a teen I didn't).
And yes, the series is a total baby of its time, but still the cast brought us the noble idea of friendship across all nations with Cdr. McLane, Lts. Jagellovsk, DeMonti, Sigbjörnson, Shubashi and LeGrelle.
And it also bore the subtle threat that, aside from alien threats, many things will be (almost) extinct in the future (nature, pets, birds, etc) đ
