Syria’s Stolen Children

Under the Assad regime, hundreds of Syrian children were hidden in orphanages to extort their parents. Families still have few answers from the new government or the international charity that kept it a secret for years.

A delightful Christmas party was given on Thursday by the Misses Levin, of Karori, to the children of the Levin Memorial Home. All that is dear to the heart of a child was provided; amongst other delicacies, strawberries and cream, and, to crown all, a “treasure hunt” in the garden—everyone finding a gift. The hostesses, assisted by Miss Turton, were untiring in their efforts to make it a red-letter day for the little ones. The children were conveyed by tram from Berhampore to Karori, and thoroughly enjoyed the outing.

I saw this orphanage while out (it's no longer open) and it struck me how far away in time it seemed, yet how vividly it still exists.
