When religious lobbyists realised that the Australian Bureau of Statistics was proposing to change the Census religion question to remove its 'leading' nature, they mounted a media campaign and called for the government to intervene.
Instead of having a question that would produce a more accurate picture of religious and non-religious affiliation for all Australians, religious lobbyists demanded that the existing question remain so that they could more easily compare the result with past Censuses — while also continuing to benefit from overstated religiosity figures.
