If you don’t want someone else from your household answering the Census religion question on your behalf, don't worry.

At Census time this year, you will be able to access a separate, private Census form from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

With this form, you will be able to override all other answers given for you on the main household form.

📣 This campaign is supported by Rationalist Society of Australia, Humanists Australia, National Secular Lobby, Humanists Victoria, the Secular Association of NSW, Australian Skeptics (Victoria Branch), and Recovering from Religion Australia.

The Rationalist Society of Australia has called on crossbench MPs and senators to protect the integrity of the Australian Bureau of Statistics' census question development process following deeply concerning revelations about political interference.

The ABS cancelled a large-scale 2024 test of an improved religion question after a coordinated lobbying campaign by Catholic Church leaders and the Albanese government's failure to meet its own deadlines. FOI documents show the ABS had explicitly rejected religious lobbyists' arguments — yet ultimately adopted a question its own executives acknowledged may bias responses.

The NSL strongly supports the RSA's call: Census data must serve to represent all Australians, not religious interests. #auspol #census26

Census - Not Religious? | 2026 Australian Census integrity

We’re encouraging you to help bring greater integrity to our Census by reflecting your authentic self when answering the religion question.

Census - Not Religious?
The Census religion question – ‘What is the person’s religion?’ – assumes every respondent has a religion. This leads to inaccurate responses with results that overstate the number of religious people in Australia. Find out more: censusnotreligious.org.au
