Mid-March Snow in Brooklyn (2021 and 2026)

At about 4:00 PM on March 12, 2026, a friend of mine who lines nearby in Brooklyn sent me a message on Delta Chat: it's snowing. I turned my head to the right to look out my window. Indeed, it was snowing. The snow would stop and start again. As of 5:12 PM, it is not snowing. This snow in March reminded me of an article I published on NLJ five years ago titled A Brief Mid-March Snow in Brooklyn. Then, like today, snow unexpectedly fell from the sky in March. While I remembered writing the […]

[Quote] Mid-March Snow in Brooklyn (2021 and 2026)

Unexpected snowfall in Brooklyn on March 12, 2026, reminded me of similarly unexpected snow flurries on March 16, 2021.

Remembering to Post to Pixelfed

I have a Pixelfed account that I use to share better quality versions of photos I post to New Leaf Journal (and more rarely this site). Back in 2021, I published an article about how to follow my Pixelfed account using its ATOM feed. It did "well" when I published it (one of my three most successful articles at the time was my 2020 Pixelfed review, which ended up having its best month in terms of page visits in January 2025, which inspired me to supersede it with a new Pixelfed review) and it […]

Back in 2021 I wrote a guide to how to follow my (or any) Pixelfed account using its ATOM feed. Seeing the article accrue feeds reminded me to post to my account.

Sad Update to ACE Academy and Kaori After Story Reviews

I wrote an article a couple of weeks ago about the "retirement" of visual novel developer PixelFade Studio. I had reviewed two PixelFade Studio visual novels, ACE Adademy (see review) and Kaori After Story (see review), with the latter checking in as my ninth most-visited article of 2025. Sadly, both of those novels and PixelFade's other three finished works have been taken down from the Steam store, as had been planned. I updated my two reviews accordingly. But I have all five PixelFade […]

Nostalgic News: Sega 32X Virtua Racing Has Been Decompiled

On January 30, 2026, Time Extension reported that the Sega 32X version of Virtua Racing has been decompiled. If you are reading this, there is a decent chance you may have questions such as "Sega 32what?" or "do you mean Virtual?" But for me, the headline represented a bit of nostalgia in my Miniflux feed reader. On December 6, 2024, I published an article on The New Leaf Journal titled Musing About Tesla Cybertruck at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The post was prompted by my photo of a Cybertruck […]

Nostalgia: Sega 32X Virtua Racing Decompiled

News that the Sega 32X version of Virtua Racing has been decompiled struck me as nostalgic since I had a 32X and Virtua Racing back in the 1990s.

Revisiting Last Year’s Election Research Article

One year to the day, I published Trump 2024 vs Bush 2004: State-by-State on The New Leaf Journal. The concept for the article was the striking similarity between the Presidential Election victories of Donald Trump in 2024 and George W. Bush in 2004 in terms of states won, notwithstanding notable differences in their winning coalitions. It was a fun survey, but apart from my research, I must say I created a nice feature image. I placed President Trump's 2024 inaugural portrait and former […]

[Note] Revisiting Last Year’s Election Research Article

I recall an article I wrote on January 23, 2026, about the similarities in Trump’s 2024 and Bush’s 2004 election victories, but note I am glad I had Trump’s inaugural portrait to use.

New Newsletter Leaf Journal Sign-Up Page

I just finished creating and publishing a new version of The Newsletter Leaf Journal Sign-Up page on The New Leaf Journal. It had been a long time since I last changed the page. I improved the structure of the page, beginning by listing different ways people can subscribe to or otherwise follow our Saturday newsletter before explaining what people can expect to find and why I think they should consider reading. One point I highlight is that The Newsletter Leaf Journal is also the official […]

https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/bpl-renovations-in-gerritsen-beach-and-carroll-gardens-12-15-25/

I read an article about the completion of the renovation of the Brooklyn Public Library in Gerritsen Beach. Although I am a life-long resident of Brooklyn (NYC) and can point out Gerritsen Beach on a map, I have never stepped foot in the neighborhood, which has its own volunteer fire department owing to its relative isolation and narrow streets.

While I had not been previously aware that Gerritsen Beach has a public library, I wrote about the renovations of the Brooklyn Public Library branch in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, back in January 2024. According to my reporting (i.e., photographing the relevant signage outside the library), the renovations were projected to be complete within 18-24 months of July 23, 2023. We blew through the outer-limit of that projection nearly five months ago. I have noted on my walks that the Library is still closed, but I did not look into the reasoning. Fortunately, a syndicated copy of the report about the Gerritsen Beach library on Brownstoner included an update about the Carroll Gardens library in the related posts (plus-one for related post links). According to the May 27, 2025 report in Brownstoner:

Additional funding allocated by state Senator Andrew Gounardes last fall ensured all the required work would be done at once, and officials said the library would be finished in summer 2025. But crews from the city’s Department of Design and Construction recently determined that the building would need additional structural enforcements to support the weight of new high-energy HVAC units.

My original report noted that one goal of the renovation was to install a new HVAC system in the library. The new HVAC system proved to be more burdensome than originally expected. The report continues:

Now, according to BPL, DDC plans to wrap up in November 2025, at which point BPL will take over for some additional sprucing up — pushing the reopening date to summer 2026.

As I noted, I can confirm that the permanent Carroll Gardens Library (there is a temporary library in neighboring Cobble Hill) has not yet re-opened. We will see if the new summer 2026 estimate turns out to be accurate.

My Haqqani Bounty Payment Hangs By a Thread

Back in 2021, I briefly moonlit as an OSNIT analyst and used The New Leaf Journal to inform the United States Government that I had information regarding the whereabouts of Sirajuddin Haqqani, who had a bounty of up to $10 million on his head. By "OSNIT," I mean I shared a news report about Mr. Haqqani being appointed as the new Interior Minister of Afghanistan. Several years have passed. Mr. Haqqani continues to be the Interior Minister of Afghanistan. I have yet to receive an award. […]

[Reply] My Haqqani Bounty Payment Hangs By a Thread

I jokingly tried to claim a bounty for information leading to the capture of Sirajuddin Haqqani by pointing to news reports in 2021. Now in 2025, the bounty is gone.

On October 20, 2024, I wrote an article about presidential runner-ups with the most recent birth dates. My article was inspired by the fact that prior to the 2024 presidential election, Al Gore, who lost in 2000, was the youngest person to finish runner-up in a presidential election.  I went through all the runners-up to see if Mr. Gore had the longest streak, and learned that he was the record holder.  Mr. Gore had appeared slated to extend his mark prior to July 2024 since both of the presumptive major party nominees were older than him.  However, the presumptive Democratic nominee, now-outgoing President Joe Biden, withdrew the race and was replaced by the Vice President, Kamala Harris, who is just more than 18 and one-half years younger than Mr. Gore. I noted the possibility that Mr. Gore’s streak would end and indeed it has. As Donald Trump prepares to join Grover Cleveland as the only men to serve two non-consecutive terms as president, Ms. Harris replaces Mr. Gore as the presidential runner-up with the most recent birth date. This is admittedly a very niche record, but Mr. Gore’s holding the mark for six elections is a fun oddity, especially in light of the fact that he was not an exceptionally young major party nominee in 2000. I will add a few small updates to my research article in the coming days.

Presidential Election Runners Up With Most Recent DOB

As of the 2024 election season, Al Gore is the youngest person to finish runner-up in a U.S. presidential election. He has held the record for 24 years. But is that THE all time record? I examine.
