Interestingly, I was able to solve a monitoring alert after a server update/reconfiguration thanks to @mwl and his #networknomicon (aka #snmp mastery).
pfSense plus 23.09 added the Kea DHCP server to replace ISC DHCP. I clicked the button to switch to Kea.
Switching to Kea immediately flagged the DHCP server as not running (using Zabbix 6.4), which was dutifully monitoring pfSense via SNMP.
After cracking open the #networknomicon and walking the MIB:
% snmpwalk pfsense .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.2 | grep dhcp
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunName.13707 = STRING: "kea-dhcp4"
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunName.13916 = STRING: "kea-dhcp6"
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunName.56040 = STRING: "dhcpleases"
Turns out that the process name changed from dhcpd to kea-dhcp4 and kea-dhcp6, but SNMP was looking for dhcpd.
The solution was just to create new monitoring items for the new processes, and disable the old one.
Current item: PFSense: DHCP server status
SNMP OID: .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.7["index",".1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.2","dhcpd"]
New items for Kea DHCP:
SNMP OID: .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.7["index",".1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.2","kea-dhcp4"]
SNMP OID: .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.7["index",".1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.2","kea-dhcp6"]
That translates roughly to "grep the process name 'kea-dhcp4' from one OID table and get its index number. Then check that index number in a related OID to get its status. Return the status to Zabbix.
I do believe I was supposed to shill the #Networknomicon during that last technical answer, but you know what?
It's Saturday. I'm taking the day off, dammit.
And if you follow me and don't know about the Networknomicon, or why it has a suggested price of $66.66, it's probably best if I don't ruin your day.
Ah, #dnssecmastery2e. The book where a 203-column terminal is just *barely* long enough.
Whelp, at least it's better than the #Networknomicon.
Just realized I have never linked the T-shirt store from my web sites.
You want the Beastie Scream or Tux Scream on a shirt or whatever? Here you go.
Plus the #Networknomicon art, and whatever else amuses me when the whim strikes.
Okay. Fine.
The #Networknomicon is now in my Redbubble store.

Today's reminder that nobody knows anything in the writing and publishing business.
I have written dozens of full-size books. Seriously, I lost count at 38.
Yet a full 35% of my Ingram sales are the #Networknomicon.
It's the end of 2020? Time for the obligatory Awards Eligibility post? Here you go:
No. No no no. NO. Nope.
Don't nominate me. It won't help me (https://mwl.io/faq#books).
Nominate other people.
Why won't awards help me?
Anything I write, I can publish.
I have enough readers that I can afford to do daft things, like the #Networknomicon or #edMastery.
I can execute visions without compromise, and the bills are paid.
What more could I want?
