Have all the mesh #VPN providers like #tailscale #zerotier #netmaker a solution where you can host the server yourself aka being not reliant on the company like #headscale? Or is this unique to tailscale? #VPN #Wireguard #meshvpn

tried out #defguard - lots of cool features, theoretically. Mysteriously couldn't ping across the first connection. maybe I'll try harder, later.

tried out #Netmaker - "internet gateway" is a paywalled feature. Fair enough I guess, but I won't be using it.

Netmaker Goes Open Source: Why We Switched to Apache-2.0

Netmaker adopts an OSI-approved, open source license for its server code, bringing WireGuard automation to new places.

Am I the only one being annoyed by this type of frontend styling?

Like come on, #netmaker, was that really neccessary?

If you click to ignore the cookie banner it reveals a button with their github star number, by the way!

I wrote a deep dive about #mesh #VPN solutions, with #NAT traversal and such. Featured: #Yggdrasil, #tinc, #Tailscale, #Zerotier, #Nebula, #Netmaker. "Easily Accessing All Your Stuff with a Zero-Trust Mesh VPN" at https://changelog.complete.org/archives/10478-easily-accessing-all-your-stuff-with-a-zero-trust-mesh-vpn

Thanks to those that participated in the previous thread, and particularly @tailscale .

There are some interesting options these days and I hope to see them continue to gain traction!

Easily Accessing All Your Stuff with a Zero-Trust Mesh VPN

Probably everyone is familiar with a regular VPN. The traditional use case is to connect to a corporate or home network from a remote location, and access services as if you were there. But these d…

The Changelog
Update: Looks like some candidantes include: #Tinc (sort of the OG mesh network VPN, which I didn't realize can do NAT traversal), #Tailscale (fully Open Source if the #Headscale frontend is used), #Nebula, #Netmaker (not entirely clear but I THINK this is also open source). Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
@tc Thank you - yeah, that Open Source #Tailscale implementation sounds interesting! Has anyone compared #Tailscale, #Nebula, #Zerotier, and/or #Netmaker?

I can no longer recommend #netmaker 18.5 release doesn't have the ability to route traffic out to the internet via an egress node

If you've ever wanted to set up a #wireguard mesh network then #netmaker might be for you. I've written up a blog post here: https://tech.davidfield.co.uk/2023/03/25/netmaker-wireguard-mesh-vpn/ which shows how to do this.

There is also included in this some work I'm doing with #tailscale which might help resolve part of my ask.
