While this is an interesting look at objectivity in #journalism, the authors appear to be completely unaware of the existing school of thought & practice known as #MovementJournalism which not only has already offered examples and crititiques of objectivity, but there are also publications like Prism and MLK 50 and journalists (myself included) who ground their work in this theory.

It is unfortunate that CJR was unaware of this.

Is Objectivity Still Worth Pursuing?

A few months ago, I started this video-focused community #Journalism site, Striking Distance Ithaca

I know the industry is rough right now (I've been a freelance journalist for a while) but if anyone has leads for grants or other funding, please comment!

And please boost if you're into the idea of this type of publication or think your followers might be.

Because our local news outlets have gotten in the habit of only covering stuff that pops up on a listserv, stuff the cops say, and the weather, I started a sort of local news publication with me and my friends volunteering our efforts.

Indigenous affairs coverage is particularly awful in this area, so this article by Ken Wolkin gives an update on the Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ sovereignty struggle.

The Ongoing Impacts of US Imposition into Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ Governance — Striking Distance

After the most recent round of home takeovers, demolitions, and kidnappings carried out by the Halftown regime in Summer and Fall of 2022, the Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ leadership struggle has dropped out of the news, but the underlying issue of US government interference persists.

Striking Distance

I'm soft launching a web publication for the liberatory efforts of Ithaca & the surrounding area.

For about 5 years I've done mostly pro-bono photography, writing, and video work for local progressive movements.

As the world grows increasingly tumultuous, #journalism
keeps getting gutted, and local coverage remains iffy, I didn't want to delay longer on formalizing and ramping up the work.

The Mastodon account for it is @strikingdistanceithaca

I didn't specify, but this was a journalistic pitch about some sketchy stuff #FossilFuel companies are doing in the area I live. I guess I should be neutral to the industry that's waged a half-century information war against the public and intimidated journalists & activists 🙄

If anyone knows of publications / editors that are more in alignment with #MovementJournalism and cover #Climate issues, let me know.

The New York Times just covered the Gayogohó:no'/ Cayuga Nation story that I covered 6 months ago and in classic form, got a white guy to leave huge omissions in the record (like how NY State acquired in violation of Federal Law) and both-sidesed the issue, linking multiple times to the site that's repeatedly published lies.

There were many, many more omissions.

Compare NYT's "objective" coverage:
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/13/nyregion/cayuga-nation-tribe-new-york.html

To my more #MovementJournalism approach:

Bulldozing. Kidnapping Claims. Inside a Battle Over a Tribe’s Future.

What’s behind the internal power struggle within the Cayuga Nation in New York?

The New York Times

In the past months, the Ithaca Tenants Union has been trying to keep a disabled immigrant housed, despite the efforts of Habitat for Humanity trying to evict her.

The property was foreclosed upon in a *deeply* flawed way & Habitat purchased it for a small fraction of its value.
