🪷 Art historian Johann Joachim #Winckelmann, born on 9th December 1717, said the #Mondragone bust of #Antinous as #Dionysus is "so immaculate that it appears to have come fresh from the hands of the artist". Once the head of a colossal statue, it now resides in the Louvre in Paris. 🪷

The #Mondragone #Antinoos bust in Musée du Louvre (90 cm, 3 ft tall) has numerous holes (31 in all) and a deep indentation in the crown of the head for fastening some heavy floral or gold metal adornment. The eyes would have been inlaid in gemstones. 🍷 🪷
