Today, in the year 1717, Johann Joachim Winckelmann was born in Stendal – one of the most important pioneers of modern art history. When I walk through our city, I often think about how, here in the heart of the Altmark, the spirit of a man took shape who would later shape Europe’s understanding of beauty and antiquity.

Winckelmann’s life’s work reminds me of the power that small places can hold – and of how people from our region have influenced the world. A good occasion to pause for a moment and look with pride at the history of our region.
