Svenska trätornet skalar upp i Saab-fabrik – siktar på Tyskland
Miles of wooden wind turbine generators are approaching the end of their useful life. In Sweden, the material they are most familiar with is wood, specifically laminated veneer. Modvion, the Swedish company, believes that constructing a network of wooden wind turbines is the future. There are indeed trees, but the advantages of the material can be attractive for the wind industry. The giant European company Vestas has already invested in this area through a subsidiary. One of Modvion's functioning wooden wind turbines is located near Gothenburg, connected to the Swedish grid, with a capacity of 2 megawatts, providing electricity to around 400 households. It is almost indistinguishable from a steel one, standing at 105 meters. It has a rotor with blades made of fiberglass reinforced plastic, but wooden towers allow for taller turbines, up to 300 meters, surpassing the current record of manufacturers. Steel is resistant but heavy, making it difficult to transport and install. Wood, on the other hand, is lighter and can be cut into modules for easier transportation. The trunks are piloted, and glue is used instead of bolts. The walls of the towers are made of 144 layers of laminated veneer, with a white exterior layer that protects them from the elements. The carbon footprint is negative. The manufacturing process depends heavily on fossil fuels. Modvion argues that wood, extracted from trees, eliminates carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while it is alive. When the tree grows back, the carbon is released again. Genius. I propose joining forces with those who want to make bamboo or reed blades for future entirely sustainable and recyclable wind turbines.
"#Schweden beweisen: #Windkraftwerke lassen sich auch aus #Holz bauen
Windkraftwerke erzeugen zwar im Betrieb sauberen #Strom, die eingesetzten Materialien sind allerdings wenig nachhaltig. Das soll sich mit einer Neuentwicklung des schwedischen Unternehmens #Modvion ein Stück weit ändern, das eine Anlage auf einem Holz-Turm installiert hat."

🌲 What is made from the same wood as a #Christmas tree, held together by glue and manufactured in a #Swedish factory for assembly later?
If that calls to mind flat-pack furniture and meatballs, you're wrong
If you answered "a wooden #WindTurbine", you could be a visionary
According to #Modvion, the #Sweden start-up that has just built the world's tallest #WoodenTurbine tower, using wood for #WindPower is the future

BBC has written about wooden wind turbines from Modvion. The actual tower is 105 m. Made from about 200 trees.

Swedish startup Modvion is building the world’s tallest wooden wind turbine.
The towers are made from laminated veneer lumber, produced by glueing several massive layers of wood together. The startup says the material has a higher strength per weight than steel and is 30% lighter.
The tower will stand 105 metres and is being built for local energy utility Varberg Energi for its wind power site near the town of Skara.
