#opinion / Aluf Benn: The ruling by the International Court of Justice is the biggest victory yet for the BDS movement
[…] As David Ben-Gurion said, Israel's fate depends on two things - its strength and its righteousness. On October 7th it became clear that its strength is far weaker than we believed, and yesterday its righteousness also suffered a terrible blow. The leader, who boasted of his longer tenure than the state's founder, is responsible for both defeats.
[…] The ruling by the International Court of Justice is the biggest victory yet for the #BDS movement, which denies Israel's right to exist. A thousand times more than the repealed UN resolution equating #Zionism with racism; more than protests on US campuses or the boycott performances by Roger Waters and his ilk.
[…] Yesterday (Friday), #Netanyahu suffered another blow from the ruling by the #ICJ in The Hague, which agreed to hear South Africa's lawsuit accusing Israel of committing genocide in the #Gaza Strip. Little consolation can be found in the judges' avoidance of an immediate ceasefire demand. Their decision presents Israel as a clear suspect of #genocide, warning it against tampering with evidence, demanding it report good behavior, and citing by name some of its top officials - President Isaac #Herzog, Defense Minister Yoav #Galant, and former Foreign Minister Eli Cohen - as inciters of genocide. While #Netanyahu is cautious about them in his speeches, not drawn into inflammatory "sword and fire" rhetoric, his overall responsibility is clear to the judges who quote his pledges of a prolonged war.
[…] What an historical irony: Netanyahu, who is considered in #Israel as the leader most reluctant to use force and enter into wars, is now mentioned in the same breath as Vladimir #Putin, Ratko #Mladic, and #Myanmar's rulers. And if South Africa wins the lawsuit, and the court determines that genocide is taking place in a Gaza, Netanyahu will be added to the list of the worst villains.
