It's interesting that I absolutely expect to have a scrollwheel on mice nowadays and it feels weird to use older platforms where they're not supported.

I still also use PGUP/PGDN/HOME/END for scrolling very heavily, to the point that I prefer 80% keyboards over more compact options to ensure I have that key cluster available.

Most importantly, though, lack of a real second button, distinct from the scrollwheel really annoys me in CAD style interfaces, where middle-misclicks hurt.

I'm certainly on Team Middle Click Paste, personally. Over 30 years of Unix/X11 usage will do that to you.

I don't mind options to do something different. I'm not even sure I'm bothered by something different being the default -- that's probably most accessible even if it'll be yet another thing I need to change when setting up a new machine.

I still use Xterm as my terminal, though, so I'm pretty resigned to being "not the target user" for this sort of thing.

Lots of chatter about GNOME and middle click paste (or lack thereof) today.

This just reminds me how hard it is to find a good mouse with an actual middle button instead of a wheel doing double-duty, but thankfully some *do* exist.

I picked up a Contour Unimouse a few months back and while I think I'd prefer a version that was in the classic (horizontal) orientation, it's reasonably comfy in its least-vertical adjustment and most importantly gives me a *real* middle button. Yay.

#MiddleClick

Nobody asked for my opinion but here it is: I used middle-click when I was still using Windows to scroll in browsers. When I switched to Ubuntu I was surprised to learn that middle-click did something completely different but totally useful nonetheless. For almost twenty years I now use middle-click pasting across several Linux distributions. I love having kind of a second clipboard.

That being said, I completely agree that this behaviour is unexpected for new or inexperienced users, and it's probably a good thing to hide it from these users.

Under the latest few iterations of the GNOME Shell selecting and middle-click pasting was borked anyway. Often it misses the first few characters of the selection in the pasting. I haven't found it yet when and why this occurs.

I'd rather see middle-click being reasonably repurposed, though.
