When I was a wee girl, sometimes when I couldn't sleep, I would lie on my bed with my head on the windowsill looking at the moon. I would breathe in the sweet dark summer air and fill my eyes with the moon's light. It always seemed so big and magical to me. I didn't know then what I do now about the moon's power, but then again, perhaps I did. I was pulled toward her for a reason, I think. I would call on her sometimes for comfort and she was always there for me. 🌝

There is a lot of pain inflicted by terrible people in our world, it's true, but as I've told anyone who listens, there really is nothing you can do about it except vote, live by example, help your local community, promote good causes, and other similar acts that focus on what you can control, your own circle of influence. Hanging on every news story or fretting over it all every day will deplete the vital JOY and peace you need in your life to be a LIGHT in this world.

Blessed Samhain and Happy Halloween to all who celebrate!

In the middle ages, and even now in Scotland, turnips were carved instead of pumpkins and they were called jack-o-lanterns. They were attached by strings to sticks and inside them were burning coals that illuminated the eyes. Celebrants would also serve food and the living were only allowed to eat it after inviting ancestors to join them. This was called a dumb supper, where the food sat available for spirits to enjoy as the living regaled them with tales from their lives and entertained them with games and songs.

These days, we might set out some food or candy for our ancestors as an offering, light candles so that they can find their way to us, and sing prayers to them at night. However you choose to celebrate, be sure to say hello to your loved ones who've passed and be respectful.
