I *really* wish that Mastodon had a Show Top Of Thread Post Only option. It is so frustrating to see the last post in a thread first and no idea what is being talked about. If a post is part of a thread, only show the first post and let me go into it to see the rest of the thread. Plus now I will see the post in order.

That’s weird, when I hit “edit” on my Toot I can’t edit the caption of an image to be considerate to my visually impaired buddies

Dear #mastodon ,

When I reply to someone, could I please see our discussion thus-far? I easily lose track of my thoughts and I don't want to look like an idiot in front of a stranger

The Mastodon software actually does limit the amount of posts one can load in home timeline which lists are pulled from to 800 posts. Other software such as https://akkoma.social/
does not do this and is the reason why I have moved on. https://calckey.org/join/ as far as I can tell does not restrict the amount of posts one can load at a time either.

* Forget to mention that some clients such as I think Fedilab (android), Mona (Mac os), and possibly icecubes(iOS) have settings that let you cache posts in the background so you can go back further than 800 posts. The beauty of open source allowing a client to hack around a software's quirks!

one thing that i think bothers me most about masto and it took me awhile to figure it out

more than no RT, more than likes not effecting the ranking of replies...

it's that there is no visual language of threads or reply threading and that there are replies to a toot.

examples:
* i can't tell what is a reply to what

* in my feed, if a person i follow boosts a random middle toot of a toot thread, i can't tell that it's a thread. (unless indicated by the author in every toot)

* if a person i follow replies to their own older toot (one i missed), the original toot isn't included. so i don't know the context of the reply. i don't even know that the reply toot has context or is even an ongoing thing.

* same goes for replies, if a person i follow replies to somebody, the original toot isn't included. yes, i know there is a "RE:, but including the thing the person is replying to seem important

in the feed, it feels like each toot is just a single entity out in the void

@ariadne @spreadmastodon This seems to be a good idea for the regular users, but journalists and anyone with a larger following another platform is not going to be impressed by the crickets they receive when they first start. I notice that "popular" social media users stick with are ones like bluesky and substack|notes that give them a lot of engagement like they are used to. I wonder if there can be separate tracks. Average user gets what you describe, but someone with a larger audience, gets something else. Automated filters might be useful for someone with a larger audience without greylisting their fanbase/readers/consituents. I speak of someone not knowing anything about activitypub, networking or programmer so...I don't know if something like automation could be implemented. Maybe something at the client side for moderators to review at a later time without disturbing celebrity/influencer/governement_official/etc. when they first join?

I wish the #Mastodon app had built in support for a direct translation service. Such as the bird house uses Google Translate. #mastodonimprovements
Would it be possible to have a “randomize” button on #Mastodon that shuffles all the posts that you haven’t seen yet? 🔀

I wonder if some of the loudest Fediverse mainstream culture critics will suddenly shift most of their time and attention to the AT protocol platforms( for example jack Dorsey's/ Twitter's bluesky) once they are out of beta. I am reminded by some journalists that briefly chatted about all the features they wanted from Mastodon, when Musk first took over, before quickly returning to twitter after a short period time. This is not to say I will not be interacting with AT protocol content in some way or another in the future myself, but maybe different open web spaces will serve different niches like different corporate platforms do for so many presently.
