FEATHRUARY 2025
Prompt 9: Huge
-> Marabou Stork
When I read the prompt for this one, the Marabou Stork immediately came to mind, because this bird is H U G E (for a bird, of course). They can reach a height of up to 152cm (5 feet), which is almost as tall as me! And with a weight of 9kg (20lb), it would not be super easy to lift one of those (for me at least (not that I wanted to (you know what I mean ...)))
Their conservation status is currently "least concern", but don't let that fool you. In some countries and regions, they are quite threatened indeed. Even though they have few natural enemies due to their enormous size, their biggest threat is, you guessed it, humans. The marabou stork's feathers are used in fashion (like, come on (nowadays, they are sometimes replaced by turkey feathers, which, not really better)) and for traditional medicine.
FUN FACT
When seen from behind, the marabou stork looks like a figure with skinny white legs and a large black cloak; that's why it's also called the "undertaker" bird. I would love one of these beauties to be my ferryman to the underworld, not gonna lie!
