💚 The mandarin duck is originally an Asian bird, but since the end of the last century this exotic bird has also been breeding in the Netherlands, usually in abandoned woodpecker nests - Van oorsprong is de mandarijneend een Aziatische Vogel maar sinds eind vorige eeuw broedt deze exotische verschijning ook in Nederland, meestal in verlaten spechtennesten 💚.

Sie wird etwa 41–49 Zentimeter lang, erreicht eine Flügelspannweite von bis zu 75 Zentimetern und wiegt rund 500–700 Gramm. Besonders die Männchen sind mit ihrem auffälligen Gefieder unverwechselbar: orangefarbene „Segel“, eine violette Brust und kontrastreiche Kopfzeichnungen.
