UPDATE: Panic over. I was able to restore the most important bookmarks, etc. on my laptop. Apparently updating Firefox frequently causes these problems. Mozilla Support lists ways to resolve them.
I may be old-fashioned to think that an update should NOT cause problems like this. Or, if it does, that the user is notified and instructed on how to fix it. I'm looking into using a different browser.
Thanks to all who replied.

MOZILLA FIREFOX 150.0.2 for Mac automatically installed a new version of itself on my laptop, wiping out all history, bookmarks, passwords. The new version is less usable and lists fewer choices when searching. I've not been able to find some of the bookmarked pages at all.
Apparently closing Firefox prompted the installation when it re-opened.
Disgusted. ☹️ Lousy work, Firefox. Browser recommendations, anyone?
